InterFlex: a page turns!
On 28 November last, the closing ceremony of the Interflex European project, of which Nice Smart Valley was the French demonstrator, was held at the Aéroclub de France in Paris.
This fine event marked the end of three years of testing, research and innovation in five European countries: Sweden, Germany, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and France.
In all, over 200 people – including representatives of European energy groups, European Commissioners, elected representatives, business and institutional stakeholders – gathered to learn about the outcomes of the various demonstrators and carry out a thorough review of the past three years.
They also came together to raise current and forthcoming issues at two round-table discussions:
- What obstacles need to be overcome in order to make local flexibility a reality?
- How can business customers, local energy communities and flexibility platforms lead the energy transition?
We were also pleased to invite to this event elected representatives and local stakeholders who have worked closely with the Nice Smart Valley teams to ensure that the trials ran smoothly, particularly within the framework of Lérins Grid. Françoise Bruneteaux, Regional Councillor for Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA) and deputy mayor of Cannes, along with Thomas Onzon, director general of the City of Cannes’ technical departments, both spoke about the three-year collaboration and thanked the teams.
“InterFlex is one of the largest and most significant European projects in which Enedis has been involved. The work accomplished during this project will make a major contribution to future developments in the energy sector in Europe.” Philippe Monloubou, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Enedis
During the ceremony, the consortium also published its draft project summary document, highlighting the project’s five innovation streams:
- Local Flexibility Markets
- Demand Response & Customer Empowerment
- Smart Functions & Grid Automation
- Cross Energy Carrier Synergies
- Multi-Service Storage & Islanding
The brochure presents the main outcomes, challenges and recommendations made by the project’s members.

Watch a retrospective summary (video) of the six demonstrators:
The outcomes of InterFlex are encouraging and make a very useful contribution to the next steps towards the energy system of the future.
What are the outcomes of Nice Smart Valley?
Nice Smart Valley achieved its three main operational objectives:
Design and test a temporary MV islanding solution that is seamless and remotely operable, using batteries and local resources, by involving a market player (ENGIE)
Test business cases for a multiservice approach to storage systems, including: system services, market optimisation, local grid constraint management and self-supply;
Design and test a competitive local flexibility mechanism organised by the DSO with a view to eliminating or minimising electricity constraints on its grid. And design an open learning platform that can activate/manage local flexibilities by connecting the ecosystem and data publication.
We are very proud to have hosted over 2,300 visitors to the showroom, representing over 255 groups and more than 22 different nationalities. And it is not over yet: the showroom will remain available for visits through to June 2020!
